Recently, the Jabodebek LRT curved line has been highlighted by the media. What is the right solution to address the alleged misdesign issue?

LRT or Light Rail Transit is a mode of mass transportation with the main source of electricity. One of the LRT projects that caught the attention of the Indonesian people a few days ago is the Jabodebek LRT which stretches from Dukuh Atas Station to Jati Mulya Station, East Bekasi. The construction of this LRT is unique because it is connected by an arch track (longspan) which received a MURI record as the Longest Span Curved Concrete Box Train Bridge. This LRT project deserves great appreciation because it was built entirely by the nation’s children

Recently, the Jabodebek LRT curved line has been highlighted by the media. Let’s discuss it one by one while providing solutions to the problems faced by Jabodebek LRT.

Wrong Design Issue and Different Train Specifications

First, the issue of the design of the LRT arch bridge is considered less wide, so the train must reduce speed to minimize accidents. The issue has been refuted by the Minister of PUPR, Basuki Hadimuljono, who stated that the Jabodebek LRT arch bridge construction is in accordance with the transportation safety provisions of the Ministry of Transportation.

In the world of construction, wrong design can cause various losses. Additional costs are needed in repairing or updating the system so that the schedule management remains optimal. Making a design requires a lot of consideration, review and approval from various parties. It is better that all processes are carried out in an integrated platform that can increase transparency and automation to reduce delays and save time.

Making a design requires a lot of consideration, review and approval from various parties. It is better that all processes are carried out in an integrated platform that can increase transparency and automation to reduce delays and save time.

Second, there is the issue of 31 trains with different specifications. Of course, with each train having a different model and software, maintenance becomes more complex and challenging. Each train requires specialized maintenance, making it difficult for the team to handle the entire fleet efficiently. Different specifications and software can result in varying performance characteristics, including speed, acceleration, braking and energy consumption. This can impact the overall efficiency of the LRT system and pose operational challenges.

Development projects such as LRT construction are quite complex and involve many parties, consist of various multi disciplines, have a tight schedule and limited costs. So that reliable project management is needed so that the process can be maximized. On a large infrastructure project, design problems or other issues can occur at any time, be it during the planning, construction or operation stages. There will be consequences and risks taken for every problem that arises.

As this LRT project is the first of its kind in Indonesia, we can take mistakes as lessons learned for the future. However, a high-risk failure in a project is quite fatal. For future LRT projects, Indonesia needs a digital platform that can collaborate on Building Information Modeling (BIM), an important component in construction projects.

Oracle Aconex, An Integrated Platform

Oracle Aconex provides the solution as an integrated platform accessible to all stakeholders, supported by modeling functionality that allows all parties to be involved in the review and approval of models and designs of the project under construction, which is essential to reduce the risk of errors and accelerate project success by ensuring every team member has access to accurate and up-to-date models.

Similarly, for the issue of 31 trains with different specifications, this can be mitigated in the future with the following solutions:

  1. Clear project management, either by appointing a project manager or team to oversee the entire design process and ensure smooth communication between all stakeholders.
  2. Creation of one clear and detailed standardized design specification including technical requirements, materials, safety features, and software usage guidelines.
  3. Transparent communication to maintain open communication among all stakeholders.
  4. Expert evaluation is also important before approval.
  5. Risk management including the risk of delays, technical challenges, or changing requirements.
  6. Conduct periodic inspections and tests during the design phase.
  7. Document management to maintain an accessible central repository to ensure that stakeholders have reviewed all relevant information.

Oracle Aconex has been trusted by global companies to support construction projects, including the Dubai Metro Megaproject. The 49-kilometer line has six intermediate stations, three of which have baggage screening facilities to serve passengers traveling between the two airports. They said that the rail project is strategic, complex and has high visibility.

The team on the project is located in various countries such as Dubai, Thailand, Australia and Hong Kong. So it required an integrated platform for proper and transparent document delivery and communication between team members. To overcome the challenges of running a megaproject, a secure collaboration platform was required, an efficient communication system between participants, and an image and document management system.

Oracle Aconex provides the solution because of its document management features that are able to manage the coordination of all teams such as civil, railway engineers, transportation planning, environmental, system assurance, architectural consulting and construction. Thousands of participants are connected by Aconex during the design and build phase. This reduces the risk of errors and miscommunication so that the project can be executed at its best.

Together with Oracle, IKON is ready to help implement construction support technology and provide integrated system support solutions suitable for LRT projects in Indonesia. In order to be implemented efficiently and reduce the risk of design errors and less thorough management controls. (*)
